The objective of the Master’s programme in Biotechnology is to enrich the students with knowledge of molecular mechanisms underlying cellular processes in living systems, including microbes, plants, and higher order organisms. Basic and current updates from the fields of genetic engineering, molecular biology, immunology, industrial microbiology, fermentation technology, neuroscience and animal biotechnology are included in order to train the students and develop a research aptitude in these fields. The curriculum also addresses the growing demand for qualified scientific personnel while creating an awareness for research ethics involving animals and humans in order to contribute to biotechnological application, advancement and expanding the knowledge of the field globally..

The objective of the Master’s programme in Microbiology is designed to prepare students to apply the knowledge of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cellular processes, taxonomy, interaction of microorganisms with one another as well as with physical and chemical agents, and higher order organisms. In addition to theory, laboratory training is provided to prepare them for careers in the industry, agriculture, and applied research where biological systems are increasingly used. Basics and current molecular updates in the areas of Industrial Microbiology, Fermentation Technology, Agriculture and Environmental Microbiology are included to enhance the skills of the students and also sensitize them to the scope for research. The programme also addresses the emerging need for skilled scientific manpower with an understanding of research ethics involving microorganisms to contribute to application, advancement and imparting the knowledge in the field of microbiology and molecular biology globally.

The candidates should have Bachelors degree under 10+2+3/4/5, pattern of education in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Agricultural, Veterinary, Fishery & Dairy Sciences, Pharmacy, Medicine (MBBS), BDS, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Medical Laboratory Science, BHMS, BAMS, B. Tech./B.E. Bioscience, Physiotherapy and Bio-medical Engineering with at least 50% marks as aggregate of all the semester / years.
The applicants are required to apply for Institute of Science, Nirma University. Applicants should fill-in all the required information in the online application form and submit it along with the prescribed non-refundable admission application processing fee on or before the prescribed last date for application. The payment should be made online by credit card/debit card/net banking.
Admission will be granted purely based on merit obtained in the Entrance Test to be conducted by the Nirma University. Appearance in the Entrance Examination does not guarantee candidates for admission in the courses. The test will be based on the undergraduate syllabus of Life Sciences and Chemistry. There will be 100 objective type questions of 100 marks. The duration of the test is 1 and ½ hours. There will be no negative marking. In case of equal score in the entrance test, the aggregate marks of the qualifying examination will be considered for determining the merit. In case of “Result Awaited” category, aggregate marks of all the previous years / semesters will be taken into consideration for determining the rank.

I opted for Masters in Biotechnology course at Institute of Science, Nirma University. My two years of journey at the institute has been wonderful. Faculty with expertise in varied field and doing active research is one of the good features of the Institute. The design of the coursework here is up to the mark to crack any competitive exam and also useful for the industrial exposure. The study environment is competitive and helped me grow more and be competent. Renaissance and other extra-curricular activities were the stress buster. Hosting of Immunocon in our institute was one of the most memorable events of my journey here.

As a student, I feel that a lot of importance is given to practicals and research which is a very good thing as it gives us a hint of how pursuing PhD would be like. The best thing is that the faculty promote smart work and make us more self-dependent and expose us to different aspects of the field through assignments.
